Birthday joys, lists, wishes and new beginnings!

Yet another birthday comes by. Every year I like to think that I’ve reached a certain level of maturity and I won’t be excited about my birthday. I’ll just treat it like another day. However, that never happens. I’m always excited about it, and I feel like a child again. I think the concept of celebrating your birthday always invokes the child in you, and never allows you to truly grow up even though you’ve just aged by a year. This time, I decided that it just makes sense to do a birthday blog post, given my newfound love for blogging. And, because it’s my birthday, I can write about whatever I want to. But, I really just want to write about the things which I’ve learnt over all these years and then I want to make a wishlist for the coming year. So, here goes!

What I Learnt in all these years!

1. Prioritize Everything cannot be equally important to you. At some point in life, you will need to decide what really matters to you and what doesn’t and make time for the things which are important to you. All your friends won’t be equally important to you and that’s alright. Only some of your friends would have been there for you and over time you’ll know who your true friends are. Make time for them, because they did the same for you.

2. Realize that sometimes “it is too late” You might mentally prepare yourself to do something only when you’re ready or when you have time. You’ll spend more time with your family when your work slows down, or will you start calling your friends regularly one day. Unfortunately it doesn’t work that way, you’ll need to find time right now. Sometimes, it is really a bit too late, and when you finally get time, you realize you missed the chance long back. This is a lesson I’ve learnt the hard way, and now I don’t allow myself to forget this.

3. Make time for your family and friends Honestly, they are the only ones who will really care about what happens to you. You might forget about them when times are easy, but when the going gets tough, these are the only people who you can turn to and who will listen to you. So, be nice to them and don’t just call them when you need something.

4. You will be alone at times Whenever you take a bold step, you will feel overwhelmed. You will be overwhelmed when you move into a new flat or start a new job or move to a new city. Sometimes, you will struggle, cry and complain. But, realize that sometimes there won’t be anyone to come and help you out. Everyone is struggling with their own issues. You’ll need to learn to support yourself and figure things out on your own.

5. Follow your gut This might sound silly, but if you ever have second thoughts about something, then think it through before taking a step. Over the years, I’ve tried to forcefully do things which I might have had second thoughts about. And those things never really worked out. So, don’t ignore your gut. It could be about something as simple as buying a dress to something as complex as shifting to another city.

6. Don’t spend recklessly This is something which you should instill in yourself as soon as you start earning. Don’t be a miser and do indulge in things which bring you happiness. But, don’t go beyond your means. Yes, buy books if you love reading, and sign up for cooking classes if that’s what you love. But, don’t go and buy a super-expensive car if you can’t afford it right now.

7. Realize that people made sacrifices for you Throughout your life, other people made sacrifices for you to get you to where you are today. Acknowledge that you didn’t accomplish everything on your own, and stay humble.

8. Try and help others If you can help even one person by doing something for them, it makes a difference. Do it because it will make you feel good about yourself. You don’t need to donate money, you can take small steps like teaching neighborhood children or distributing your old clothes to people who need them

9. Look after yourself Make time to look after your health, eat well and work-out. Make time for your hobbies. Try to get rid of unhealthy habits. It’s good to always look for ways to improve oneself.

10. Get your perspective right Think about what really matters to you. Yes, you might have messed up at work one day. But, don’t fall to bits because of that. Try and think of the impact ten years from now. It’s just a bad day! Pick yourself up and get back to your normal routine. You might have had a bad quarrel with a loved one. But, don’t continue to give the person a hard time just to satisfy your ego. Think of all the times the person put up with you and helped you out. Is the fight really worth it? Perspective makes all the difference, because it affects your choices, and your choices ultimately help you make or break the kind of life you want to lead.

Armed with all of that knowledge and past mistakes and learning, let’s move on to new beginnings.

Wishlist for the Year

1. Travel to a new place every month

2. Learn how to cook properly: follow recipes from scratch and don’t skip the hard bits

3. Make more time for family and friends: I still don’t make as much time as I would like to so let’s change that this year

4. Stop overthinking things

5. Stop being scared of small pests – ants, spiders, lizards etc. It’s time to grow up!

6. Stop procrastinating – I love making to-do lists and I eventually might get to the tasks, but I tend to waste a lot of time in between

7. Stop blaming external things for not being able to achieve something, and, also stop waiting for the opportune moment to try and achieve something

8. Stop being so resistant to change, and trying to plan for everything – realize that some things cannot be predicted

9. Be nice to everyone and realize that everyone has their own issues

10. Read more & Keep blogging!

But he’s tryiong none the less. I’ve been using
Movable-type on various websites for about a year and am concerned about switching to
